Draw Plans & Create Supply List
It was determined that the optimal size of the octangular planter would have a diameter of 14' in order to fit in with the chosen location. Using the provided worksheet and referencing the information in this plan, a list of supplies will be drawn up and an estimate of costs written and submitted. Approximate Time: 3 Hours |
Determine Center Point of Planter
Although a general location was decided upon, the specific spot for the planter was determined by the existing sprinkler system. A sprinkler head was in a location that allowed for its use as the center point of the planter. Similar considerations are necessary when starting projects at other sites. Approximate Time: 1/2 Hour |

Prepare Planter Area
For this project, the area on which the planter is to be placed will need to have the sod removed and the ground packed. Shovels, sod cutters, and a front end loader may be used to accomplish this task (see tools). Approximate Time: 2 Hours |
Cut Timber
Determine the angle of the cut necessary to make an even octagon. Mark timber with straight edge and pencil, then cut with power or hand saw (see tools). Approximate Time: 7 Hours |

Lay Out Timbers
Lay the timbers out in the planned configuration to make sure that the cuts are aligned and the octagon even on all sides. Use hand saw to clean up any burrs left from the cutting process to ensure a clean fit at the joint. Approximate Time: 1 Hour |
Add Supports
Galvanized angle supports are secured to the interior side of the planter at each joint. To retain its shape, rebar is added to the planter. Holes are first drilled into each timber at its center and near both ends. Three-foot lengths of rebar are then hammered through the timber into the ground using a sledgehammer. Eleven inch lengths of rebar are similarly added to the two top tiers of timbers (holes should be staggered to avoid hitting rebar in lower tiers). Approximate Time: 8 Hours |

Install PVC Pipe and Sprinkler System
Using the existing water system, a 'T' connection will be made to the old sprinkler head and a 2' piece of PVC pipe added to either side of the connector. Elbow connectors are added to the end of the cut pipe and another 18" length of pipe added to each connector. Sprinkler heads are then added to the end of each protruding pipe. Approximate Time: 2.5 Hours |
Fill The Planter
After testing the frame's structure and laying the irrigation system, soil amendment may be added to the planter. The required amount of soil amendment is added using a utility vehicle and spread out evenly using garden rakes (see tools). Approximate Time: 1.5 Hours |

Plant Bedding Flowers
Bedding flowers are carefully chosen to suit the environmental conditions of the site. Flowers are placed in a symmetrical pattern to create an interesting and attractive presentation. Approximate Time: 4 Hours |
