The Landscaping Uniform

The uniform for this vocation includes: T-shirt, collared shirt, jeans, steel toed shoes, gloves, goggles, and ear protection. 

Dressing appropriately for the job requires that shirt tails be tucked in, pants are not sagging, and that attire is clean at all times. To prevent injury, eye and ear protection is required when using most power and hand tools. 


Round Tip Shovel

Use: digging planting holes, moving soil or related material

Safety: wear proper hand and foot protection

 


Trench Shovel

Use: excavation of irrigation or other trenches and uncovering sprinklers

Safety: wear proper hand and foot protection
 


Square Edge

Use: aligning 45O/90 angle marks for cutting most material

Safety: caution is needed when using edge with cutting instrument, such as razor, knife or related tool
 


Circular Saw

Use: making straight or angled cuts in lumber up to 6" x 6" in size. Position head to view cutting edge notch in front of saw.  Cut firmly with steady pace.

Safety: required safety equipment is needed when using saw, including eye and ear protection. Never force the saw through material. Unplug from electrical source when not in use.


Hand Saw

Use: making straight or angled cuts in lumber. Position head to view cutting edge notch in front of saw.  Cut firmly with steady pace, cutting on the forward stroke.

Safety: required safety equipment is needed when using saw, including eye and ear protection. 
 


Drill

Use: for making circular holes in various materials. Specific drill bits are used for specific materials (i.e.: wood, metal, etc.). Use body positioning to add appropriate pressure and stability. 

Safety: eye protection should be worn to prevent damage from splintered material. Avoid bending drill bit to prevent breakage.


Sledge Hammer

Use: for securing spikes or rebar to ground or material, as well as breaking up concrete, splitting wood, etc. Use in balanced position shown for small jobs requiring accurate control.  Use full swing over head when maximum force is required for breaking material.

Safety: eye protection to prevent injury from debris; hand and foot protection to prevent injury to appendages.


Bow Rake

Use: moving and/or spreading soil, gravel or related material.

Safety: use gloves to prevent callouses and other damage to hands 

 


Broadcast Handspreader

Use: for distribution of seed, fertilizer or related material. Hold at waist height. Walk at medium pace while turning crank handle at moderate rate to ensure even dispersion. 

Safety: use eye and hand protection when using with material harmful to skin and eyes.


Front End Loader

Use: moving or loading soil, gravel or related material.

Safety: specific requirements are necessary in order to operate front end loader and gator (not shown). Ask instructor for details before operating this equipment.


PVC Pipe Cutter

Use: specifically used for cutting PVC material. Allows for a clean edge necessary for good cohesion when connecting to joints.

Safety: eye and hand protection should be worn to prevent injury due to debris. Ensure that water source has been shut off before cutting into any existing PVC pipe system.
